Established in 1790 as the United States' capitol city, Washington DC is a popular destination for travelers interested in our nation's history, the US government and the best of the arts and entertainment. Although tourists enjoy the city throughout the year, Springtime in Washington DC is the most beautiful due to the famous Japanese Cherry Blossom trees that bloom early in the season. If you're looking for advice on when the city is likely to have the least visitors, try late Fall, but watch for an occasional snowstorm!

At the top of the list of places to visit in Washington DC are the White House, the Presidential residence, and the US Capitol building, where Congress begins session every August. The National Mall, Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorials are beautiful sights but the best non-govenermental destination in the city has to be the (free!) Smithsonian Institution, which is actually composed of thirteen different museums as well as the National Zoo, which has recently acquired new panda bears! If you can, set aside a full day to see the Smithsonian and, if you have children, the National Zoo is a must.

As a cultural center, Washington DC is among the best. Supported by colleges like Georgetown and associated academics, it's easy to find something worthwhile to see or do while in DC. Kennedy Center is the largest performing arts center in the US and features daily free performances in the famed Great Hall. Theaters such as Ford's and the Warner are among the top to investigate. If you have the time and energy, make sure to stop by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the National Gallery of Art and the Air and Space Museum if you can!
